USING THE STROBIES HONEYCOMBS, SNOOTS AND BARNDOORS

Here we are using a combination of the Strobies Softbox but for the purpose of this we will ignore the softbox.

Two honeycombs have been used here, one placed on the background and on the side of the face and hair to create a 3 dimensionally look.

The model is best placed about 1.5 to 2 mtrs (4 to 6 feet) from the camera position.

Settings used

Manual mode 1/250 th Sec, f2.8 24-70 mm lens -0.7 compensation
Flash on camera + 0.7 compensation flash set to Master
Honeycomb grid Flash -2 compensation on hair honeycomb on the background adds the highlight to the dark grey background set to -1.7 EV.

Here we can see how the honeycombs have created the extra dimensions to the softbox lighting this in turn gives the 3 dimensional look or depth to the image.

The softbox is excluded in the diagram to show how the Honeycombs were used. One is directly behind the model facing towards the background and the second one coming in from directly beside of the background material to highlight the hair and side of the face.

Interfit Tip

In current trends many professional photographers are using two hair and face lights, the second one would be placed opposite to the rear/ front facing honeycomb on the other side of the face. This will give a harder but balanced light to give a really emphasis on the shape of the face.

USING THE STROBIES SNOOT AND BARNDOORS

Here we we can see how moving the position of a snoot can change the appearance of the image, on the Yellow background the Snoot is place in front of the model (to the side of the Photographer and pointed directly at the background this is creating a spot of light to enhance the shape of the model, this has been balanced to - 1 ev compared to the facial illumination. Here the model is within one foot (30cm) of the background.

On the second image (Orange / Red background) the snoot is used to create a splash of light diagonally across the background, to make this happen you need a minimal amount of light falling on the background from the frontal lighting. Here the model is around 1.5 meters from the background.

On the third image (Blue background) the Barndoor's have been placed on the floor with the doors creatinga shaft of light. the flash gun was placed intentionally close to the background to create some over exposure towards the bottom of the image.
